Scuba Life

Improve your dive skills and explore the world beneath the surface around these breathtakingly beautiful islands.

Scuba liveaboard in Komodo

Detailed Overview

Komodo National Park, off of the island of Flores in Indonesia, is one of the top scuba diving destinations in the world. A liveaboard boat is the optimal way to explore the insane underwater life from sunrise to sunset.

We joined up with Scuba Republic for an incredible few days diving around the islands of Indonesia. Scuba Republic runs one of the most budget (but still amazing) options for 4d/3n or 8d/7n boat trips to world-known dive sites like the Cauldron, China Rock, Makassar, Batu Bolong, and more.

For the dive enthusiasts, the area is known for great drift diving which is probably as close to floating through outer space as you’ll ever get. And as a bonus you’ll get to hike on the surrounding islands to see Komodo dragons, for which the park gets its name.

Manta rays, giant eagle rays, tons of sharks, turtles and incredible coral life. This was one of the best diving experiences I’ve had!

Thanks to my dive buddy Y O S H for some of the pics!

What I liked Most

The sea life is the best I've ever seen - schools of hundreds of manta rays, giant eagle rays, tons of sharks, turtles, insane healthy hard and soft corals... you'll be spoiled forever and never want to dive anywhere else. Scuba Republic runs a pretty tight operation and the clientele is cool because the price point is not too high.

How did you get there?

Fly first to Bali (Denpasar), Indonesia, then to Labuan Bajo, Indonesia

Pro Tips

  • Bring your bathing suit, GoPro, and any diving gear you may have.
  • There is no cell phone service or wifi on the boat so bring a hotspot or prepare to go off the grid.

Cost Details

~$600 for all-inclusive 4d/3n diving

Additional info on transportation

The boat leaves from the Labuan Bajo, Indonesia port (15 min. drive from airport)

Additional info on drinks

Soda and beer costs extra on the boat

Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Advanced Open Water Cert

Detailed Overview

How does gliding on the ocean floor with thousands of fish, turtles, manta rays and sharks (the nice ones) sound? Scuba diving is one of my favorite things to do and getting my Advanced Cert was a great step to start diving deeper and more rewarding locations around the world.

The advanced cert consists of 5 dives and a bit of theory that covers some advanced diving techniques including deeper dives, buoyancy management, night diving and dded navigation techniques. The awesome thing about the advanced course is that minus some homework you need to read up on (very very easy and quick), everything is practical and in the water. You’re dives ARE your tests and its just like making a fun dive but demonstrating what you’ve learnt. I did it in 2 days and found my buoyancy control had dramatically improved in the time and i was extremely comfortable in varying conditions including night dives.

All of the instructors at Blue Marine are knowledgeable, friendly and truly live to dive. They know all the best spots and know all about aquatic life – all they want to do is share. Ask for Hannes – he was my instructor and is awesseeooomme. Chilled and will make sure you have fun.

What I liked Most

Underwater diving was incredibllleee!! its another world down there when the lights go off

How did you get there?

Ferry from the Bali mainland which is about $20 USD

Pro Tips

  • Water is a beautiful 28 degrees celcius, so a bathing suit is perfect.
  • Hannes was an AWESOME instructor. Ash for him. Patient, knowledgeable and a whole lot of fun. Bring him a brownie and see what happens :)
  • We stayed at Kuluku Resort - cheap accommodation and right next to the dive shop

Cost Details

Roughly $330 USD for the course which includes all equipment and the 5 dives that are required to complete the course.

Open Water Dive Certification

Detailed Overview

Want to become a certified diver in the most incredibly stunning island in the world? Then this is for you.

When I got to Gili Air I wasn’t expecting to dive more than once, let alone get certified to be an open water diver but my friends spoke so highly of this school I had to check it out. Insert Blue Marine Dive. All of the instructors there are knowledgeable, friendly and truly live to dive. They know all the best spots and know all about aquatic life – all they want to do is share!

This certification is a 3-4 day course that I finished in three days because I was on a time crunch (they’ll work with you to get the five needed dives in, while staying safe of course). The course covered everything I needed to learn about diving, from theory to pool skill training, to equipment training to the dives themselves. I had three dives under my belt before this course but this course can be for beginners as well since the training is so hands-on.

My instructor was Musa – absoltue rock star and shout out for the stunning pictures above. I had 1-1 training for three days where he took me through theory, tested my skills and dove with me. The guy can point out any fish from 20meters away – insane!

We stayed at the resort right next to the dive shop but if you want to do it all inclusive, the shop has a resort as well along with many other activities at your disposal: Yoga, paddle boarding, snorkeling, etc…

What I liked Most

Loved the personal 1-1 attention I got with Musa. Absolutely incredible instructor and I felt like I was diving with a friend.

How did you get there?

We took a ferry from Bali to Gili Air (~20 usd)

Pro Tips

  • Musa was an incredible instructor, ask for him.
  • Buy your instructor an ice cream (or a brownie) and see what happens.
  • Talk to Hannes about the drinking competitions between dive shops on the island

Cost Details

The course is ~$360 usd and includes all gear, personalized instruction and 5 dives.
